Saudi Tourism Authority’s Brewtopia Aims to Boost Travel Trade with Authentic Coffee Tasting in Bengaluru

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) recently organized “Brewtopia – A Qahwa Experience” in Bengaluru, an exclusive gathering designed for travel trade partners. Hosted at Olive Beach this August, the event welcomed 30 travel trade association members to delve into the depths of Saudi’s celebrated coffee heritage. The primary goals of the gathering were to reinforce destination memory, elevate Saudi coffee as a prime souvenir, and strengthen trade relationships through genuine cultural exchanges.

A compelling presentation detailed the history of coffee, recognizing Arabia as the original hub for the famous Arabica bean. Participants discovered the origins of the term “coffee,” derived from “qahwa,” which translates to “wine of the bean.” This backdrop set the stage for exploring how modern Saudi coffee traditions are interwoven with these historical threads.

The showcase included a live demonstration of traditional qahwa brewing techniques, drawing a parallel to similar practices in India influenced by historic spice trade routes. Under the skilled guidance of Ganga and Pavan, founders of Coffee Mechanics and Kana, attendees engaged with the brewing process using a French press. The qahwa was then presented in small ceramic cups, complemented by Medjool dates, served from a traditional brass Dallah to encapsulate the essence of Saudi Hafawah or hospitality.

The event also featured a networking segment where attendees mingled with the STA team, exchanging insights about Saudi destinations such as Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, along with unique experiences in AlUla and Al Baha. Discussions also covered topics like itinerary options, visa facilitation, and increased flight connections with Bengaluru.

Through such initiatives, STA continues its mission to showcase Saudi as a dynamic tourism destination and deepen ties with travel industry partners across India.

Global Sustainable Tourism Council Teams Up with Türkiye Tourism Agency to Craft New Sustainability Criteria for Food Service Providers

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), with support from the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), is developing a new set of GSTC Criteria tailored specifically for tourism food service providers. This set will establish global standards for sustainability within the tourism food service sector, though its official name will be determined during the development process.

Food and beverages are crucial elements of a destination’s intangible heritage and tourism appeal. As gastronomy tourism grows, it generates significant revenue and employment but can also impact the environment, local communities, and cultural heritage negatively.

To address these challenges, the GSTC Criteria will provide global guidelines for sustainable practices in food service. These criteria will help industry players manage their operations more sustainably, reduce costs through sustainability measures, and protect ecosystems, biodiversity, and local economies.

The GSTC is dedicated to promoting and implementing best practices for sustainable tourism. Alongside the new criteria, the GSTC will introduce a training program focused on sustainability for restaurants and food service providers, expanding its well-regarded Sustainable Tourism Training Program.

“All of the specific sets of GSTC Criteria are widely regarded as ‘the global standards for sustainable tourism’ due to our highly inclusive process of developing them and because their foundation is UN-developed and compatible with the SDGs,” says GSTC CEO Randy Durband

The implementation of these GSTC Criteria will have a lasting impact, significantly reducing environmental harm, preserving local cultures and cuisines, and promoting sustainable consumption and production practices.

Food sustainability aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).

Criteria Development Process

A Criteria Development Advisory Group, consisting of up to 10 organizations from both public and private sectors, will be established during the development phase. This group will provide expert feedback to the GSTC Technical Team while GSTC maintains overall control of the process. The Advisory Group will also promote industry participation in the Public Consultation and Feasibility Assessment phases.

The GSTC’s International Standards Committee (ISC) will supervise the development and revision process. The ‘Terms of Reference’ (TOR) for this process will adhere to the ISEAL Standard-Setting Code of Good Practice.

Public consultations, both online and in-person, will be conducted, including a workshop at the GSTC2024 Conference in Singapore from November 13-16, 2024.

A visual representation of the Criteria development process is displayed below (Figure 1).

Key Contributor: Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA)

Following Türkiye’s successful implementation of its National Sustainable Tourism Program, launched in 2022 in partnership with GSTC to advance sustainable practices in the Turkish tourism industry, TGA is furthering its commitment to sustainability by supporting GSTC’s global initiatives to promote sustainable tourism in the food and beverage sector.

Highlighting that Türkiye was the first country to make an agreement with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) at the Governmental level in 2022, Republic of Turkiye Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said: “So far, we have verified and certified over 18,000 accommodation facilities under the ‘Türkiye’s Sustainable Tourism Program,’ prepared as part of this agreement. Following this success in the accommodation sector, we launch the next phase of our Sustainable Tourism Program, expanding our efforts to include the food and beverage sector. The certification program we will implement for the food and beverage sector, which will pioneer the world once again, demonstrates the continuity of our sustainability efforts in tourism while also increasing the number of our businesses providing services in line with GSTC criteria in the field of gastronomy. With this program, which will be in harmony with our culinary culture that inherently embraces the concept of sustainability, we will continue to be an exemplary country in sustainable tourism worldwide.”

Türkiye’s Pilot Certification Test

The TGA will introduce a pilot certification program as part of the National Sustainable Tourism Program. This initiative will use the GSTC Industry Criteria and updated indicators to evaluate the feasibility of certifying restaurants.

Digital Economy Promotion Agency Introduces Unified Platform-as-a-Service to Streamline and Fuel Digital Tourism Growth in Thailand Travel Sector

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) has advocated for the creation of a unified service framework to simplify business processes for international entities and boost the digitally-driven tourism sector in Thailand. This proposal intends to consolidate data sharing across different governmental bodies to improve business efficiency.

The envisioned unified service would operate as a platform-as-a-service through a centralized data hub, linking all pertinent government agencies. This integration is anticipated to propel the growth of travel-related products and services within the nation.

Nuttapon highlighted that the cost of living for foreigners in Thailand stands at roughly US$1,000 per month, which is considerably lower than the US$3,000 monthly average in Europe. Additionally, Thailand boasts an 88% individual Internet penetration rate, with household connectivity at 43.7%. The country is globally ranked 11th in terms of home internet speed and holds the second position within ASEAN.

Digital Tourism Initiatives

Amid these favorable conditions, foreign entrepreneurs and investors have expressed concerns over business operational challenges. Nuttapon underscored the necessity for a platform-as-a-service that aligns with Thailand’s digital tourism strategies, promoting interagency cooperation to amalgamate their application programming interfaces (APIs) into the centralized data portal.

This cooperative effort involves key stakeholders such as the Customs Department, Immigration Bureau, Revenue Department, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industry, Board of Investment (BoI), and the Thai Bankers’ Association. The Digital Government Development Agency is proposed to spearhead the development efforts.

In 2022, DEPA, in partnership with Travizgo Technology Co, launched ThailandCONNEX, an expansive digital tourism application platform. In its debut year, ThailandCONNEX engaged over 108,000 business operators and featured upwards of 201,000 travel-related offerings, potentially generating an economic impact of more than 12 billion baht.

ThailandCONNEX serves as a central intermediary in a business-to-business wholesale model for Thai tourism stakeholders. It provides a platform for members to display and distribute their products and services through both local and international online travel agencies. Additionally, it includes features like a digital tourism data repository and digital tokens for users.

The platform’s initiatives also encompass various marketing campaigns that facilitate idea sharing among top-level public and private sector executives, tourism operators, and influencers. DEPA continues to encourage tourism industry entrepreneurs to engage with the ThailandCONNEX platform and participate in digital tourism business matching events.

These digital initiatives aim to improve digital literacy among Thai tourism operators and highlight innovative digital technologies and solutions from travel tech companies through events like the Digital Tourism Fair and Digital Tourism Unboxed.
