TAT shines spotlight on sustainable tourism at ATF 2024

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is emphasizing Thailand’s renewed commitment to more meaningful travel, prioritizing high-value and sustainable tourism at the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2024, taking place from January 22 to 27 in Vientiane, Lao PDR.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said “TAT recognises the ATF, now in its 42nd year, as a significant annual platform for ASEAN tourism promotions. The event comprises several high-level components, including meetings of ASEAN Tourism Ministers, a tourism conference, media briefings, and the region’s leading TRAVEX trade show. TAT is proud to be a part of promoting ASEAN as a unique tourism destination to buyers from around the world.”

Aligned with the ATF 2024’s theme, “Quality and Responsible Tourism – Sustaining ASEAN Future,” TAT continues its focus on high-value and sustainable tourism. This philosophy is evident in the atmosphere of the Thailand Stand at the ATF TRAVEX 2024.

Officially opened on January 24, the Thailand Stand saw the presence of H.E. Morakot Sriswasdi, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Lao PDR, Mr. Kitti Chaodee, Secretary to Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, and Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, along with TAT executives.

The Thailand Stand showcases a variety of meaningful travel experiences reflecting Thai soft powers and sustainable objectives. Thai massage demonstrations underscore the kingdom’s global reputation as a premier destination for health and wellness tourism. The Thailand Stand also features collaborative presentations by key players such as the Thailand Privilege Card, Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, and the Isan Tourism Industry Trade Association, all playing crucial roles in ASEAN intra-regional tourism and connectivity.

TAT conducted the Thailand Media Briefing to provide updates on Thailand’s tourism and its role in ASEAN tourism promotion.

In 2023, Thailand welcomed over 28 million tourists, generating a revenue of 1.2 trillion Baht, with 35% from ASEAN countries. TAT has set a revenue target for 2024 at 3 trillion baht in the best-case scenario, comprising 1.92 trillion Baht from international tourism and 1.08 trillion Baht from domestic tourism. Anticipated figures include 35 million foreign arrivals and 200 million domestic trips.

Mr. Nithee Seeprae, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, said “To achieve the target, TAT will continue to strengthen Thailand’s image as a sustainable and responsible tourism destination. We are enhancing efforts to elevate supply and sustainable standards and leveraging Thai soft powers to offer meaningful travel experiences in Thailand.”

The Thailand Tourism Awards and TAT’s Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs) underscore Thailand’s commitment to high-value and sustainable tourism. The 2023 edition of the Thailand Tourism Awards introduced two new categories, Low-carbon and Sustainability, demonstrating the country’s dedication to low-carbon tourism and its direction towards high-value and sustainable tourism.

TAT’s STGs, developed in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, classify the Thai tourism industry through a Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR) system. Currently, 497 businesses in Thailand hold STAR certifications.

Regarding ASEAN tourism promotions, considering that about one-third of Thailand’s visitor arrivals in the previous year came from ASEAN, TAT has revamped its marketing strategy for 2024. The focus now shifts towards segments with higher spending habits, longer stays, a penchant for local exploration, and a commitment to environmental care. These segments include luxury experiences, health and wellness, family-friendly holidays, and secondary destinations.

“ASEAN connectivity plays an important role in boosting Thailand’s tourism industry and generating significant economic gains. Connectivity by air, land, rail, and maritime can increase the flow of visitors. Hence TAT sees the development of intra-regional transportation infrastructure as crucial in facilitating easier and more affordable travel,” Mr. Nithee concluded.

Trip.com Group boosts Southeast Asia tourism with ambitious plans

During the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Ms. Jane Sun, the CEO of Trip.com Group, held private discussions with key leaders from Southeast Asian nations. In discussions with Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam, Ms. Sun delved into the substantial growth prospects of the tourism sector and provided perspectives on its advancement.

The meetings focused on how Trip.com Group could assist governments in boosting tourism and contributing to the overall development of the travel sector. The tourism industry plays a crucial role in countries’ GDPs, with forecasts from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) predicting it to grow into a USD 15.5 trillion industry by 2033, representing a 50% increase from its 2019 value of USD 10 trillion and accounting for over 11.6% of the world’s economy. This expected growth is projected to create approximately 430 million jobs globally by 2033, underscoring its substantial impact on job creation and the labor market.

Ms. Sun and Prime Minister Hun Manet discussed strategies to promote Cambodia as a preferred destination for international tourists. This involved tailoring packages for Trip.com Group users, covering everything from arrival to departure. Additionally, they explored the possibility of organizing workshops to foster collaborations with local partners, co-developing new products, and utilizing Trip.com Group’s MICE offers and resources to promote “bleisure” travel to Cambodia. With 2024 being a significant year, Trip.com Group is dedicated to close collaboration with the Cambodian government to embody the spirit of the Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange.

Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his satisfaction with the meeting, stating, “I am pleased to have met Ms. Sun and her team in Davos. The Cambodian government is formulating policies to promote the growth of the tourism industry in a post-pandemic world, and we welcome Trip.com Group’s plans to expand its business in the realm of possibilities, it was truly a privilege to engage with Prime Minister Hun Manet and delve into the promising avenues for catalyzing tourism in Cambodia, as expressed by Ms. Jane Sun, the dynamic CEO of Trip.com Group. As Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport opens up new horizons with enhanced accessibility and expanded capacity, we eagerly look forward to a synergistic alliance with the Cambodian government. Our vision encompasses tailoring bespoke packages for our global users, offering them an immersive experience of Cambodia’s rich heritage. Armed with our comprehensive platform and cutting-edge content marketing strategies, we are poised with confidence to not just promote but craft unforgettable journeys for global travelers in Cambodia. Together, we aspire to unlock the full potential of Cambodia’s tourism industry and etch indelible memories for visitors from every corner of the globe.

In the dynamic landscape of global economic growth, particularly in Southeast Asia, Trip.com Group stands as a pivotal force. The year 2023 witnessed an astounding threefold increase in the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) for Southeast Asia, coupled with a remarkable surge of 260.6% in booking volume during the same period. Cambodia, in particular, captured substantial interest, evidenced by a staggering YoY surge of 150.3% in searches last year and a concurrent 214.2% surge in booking volume.

The allure of Phnom Penh solidified its position as one of the top 10 sought-after destinations on Trip.com Group’s platforms in 2023. The booking dynamics for Cambodia in 2023, with a window of 6.1 days, mirrored the spontaneity observed in 2022 (6.12) and 2019 (5.46). 2024 Amadeus report: Global business travel booms with new trends & tech

2024 marks a rebound in business travel, shaped by new trends and tech for enhanced value, as explored in the “Global Business Travel Trends 2024″ report.

This year is poised for a resurgence in corporate travel spending, reaching levels reminiscent of those in 2019. The landscape of business travel has evolved considerably over the past five years, with today’s business travelers demanding more value and benefits from each journey. Emerging technologies, particularly in the realm of Generative AI, are playing a crucial role in enhancing the overall travel experience.

The latest insights into these developments are highlighted in the “Global Business Travel Trends 2024” report, a collaborative effort by Globetrender and Cytric Easy from Amadeus. The report identifies seven key trends that are expected to redefine the corporate travel experience in 2024, including AI-powered personal assistants, executive outdoor retreats, and innovative strategies like “Objective Stacking.”

Revolution in Self-Managed Travel with AI Personal Assistants
The rise of Generative AI is transforming the way corporate travelers plan their trips, introducing AI Personal Assistants that offer round-the-clock support. These digital assistants can assist with everything from suggesting travel itineraries to helping travelers adhere to company policies, all through user-friendly, conversational interfaces.

The Emergence of Executive Outdoor Retreats
The concept of team-building activities is evolving into more extensive, nature-based retreats that offer a range of engaging and sometimes challenging experiences. These retreats aim to build team spirit and loyalty, taking participants out of their comfort zones with activities like rafting and wilderness survival.

Maximizing Business Travel Value with “Objective Stacking”
As companies face growing pressures to be financially and environmentally responsible, employees are expected to justify the necessity of their business trips. The concept of “Objective Stacking” involves planning trips to achieve multiple objectives, thereby increasing efficiency and value.

Blended Itineraries Take Precedence Over Strict Travel Policies
2024 sees a shift towards more flexible and personalized corporate travel policies, allowing for blended itineraries that combine business and leisure elements. This approach prioritizes the traveler’s experience and well-being.

Corporates Strive for Net Zero Emissions with Sustainable Travel Strategies
Following the COP28 agreement, companies are increasingly committing to sustainability goals. The travel industry is no exception, with strategies like “Objective Stacking” and flexible travel policies aiding in reducing carbon emissions.

Advancements in Digitized Expense Management
The shift towards digital expense management and virtual cards represents a significant change in corporate finance, simplifying processes and enhancing security and compliance.

Power Networking: Making the Most of Global Events
The focus is now on maximizing every opportunity at conferences and events, with a shift towards more purposeful networking and richer itineraries that extend beyond the main agenda.

Globetrender CEO Jenny Southan and Amadeus Cytric Solutions’ Deborah Mahoney emphasize the importance of discernment in business travel, balancing the need for in-person interactions with financial and environmental considerations. The future of corporate travel is marked by technological advancements and a return to basics, highlighting the significance of human connections and optimized travel experiences.
