In 2018, I embarked on a journey from South Africa to Anhui, China, accompanied by my husband, Stephen, and our sons, Nicolas (9) and Skylar (5). Our initial destination was Maanshan, a vibrant city nestled along the Yangtze River, seamlessly blending modernity with tradition. We delved into local markets, enjoyed community festivities, and immersed ourselves in the rich cultural tapestry of Maanshan.
Subsequently, we relocated to the quieter Dangtu county, where we embraced the serene countryside and tight-knit community. Anhui’s natural beauty and warm hospitality left indelible memories, yet the call for new adventures beckoned, leading us to Guiyang, the capital of Southwest China’s Guizhou province.
Guiyang welcomed us with open arms, offering opportunities to work at Guiyang Prime International School. The school not only enriched our professional lives but also fostered our children’s academic growth. With its dynamic learning environment and diverse international community, Guiyang Prime International School became a symbol of quality education, igniting a love for learning in our sons, who are now nearly fluent in Chinese.
Over our five years in China, we explored various cities such as Qingdao, Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Huangshan, and Wuhu, each providing unique experiences.
Reflecting on our time in Guiyang, the city has proven to be a treasure trove of experiences. Guiyang’s commitment to ecological balance is evident in its breathtaking landscapes, where rolling hills and lush greenery form a natural canvas. Serene locations like Qianling Park and Baihua Lake offer tranquility, while the Nanming River weaves a tale of environmental sustainability.
Since 2021, Guiyang has been our haven. Its efficient infrastructure, well-connected transportation network, and vibrant markets make daily life culturally rich. Navigating the city’s urban landscape became a daily delight, revealing the depth of Guiyang’s unique charm.
Hidden gems in Guiyang unfold in its rural outskirts, where serene landscapes and close-knit communities offer a refreshing contrast to the urban pulse. Here, we discovered the simplicity and authenticity of rural living.
Guiyang’s cultural vibrancy became an integral part of our daily lives. The city’s rich ethnic diversity found expression in lively festivals, where traditional music, dance, and vibrant costumes took center stage. Our active participation in local celebrations, including the Dragon Boat Festival and Miao New Year, intricately woven our personal narrative into the tapestry of Guiyang’s cultural heritage.
A comprehensive exploration of Guiyang would be remiss without indulging in its unique cuisine. From the fiery delights of Guizhou’s renowned spicy hotpot to the delightful local snacks found in bustling night markets, each culinary experience became an adventure, reflecting the city’s deep-rooted history.
In summary, our life in Guiyang has been an enthralling journey, encompassing natural marvels, urban amenities, rural serenity, and the rich tapestry of unique customs and cultures. Guiyang transcends being merely a residence; it is a cherished home that warmly embraced us as foreigners. Our ongoing Guiyang story serves as a testament to the city’s enduring charm as witnessed through the eyes of those fortunate enough to consider it home. Looking forward, we eagerly anticipate the unfolding chapters of our Guiyang adventure.
