British travelers planning trips to Italy and other European destinations in 2025 will encounter stricter regulations, including new document requirements.
New regulations are set to impact any British travelers heading to Europe next year, so if you’re planning a holiday, it’s essential to pay attention.
These rules, which are expected to come into effect in mid-2025, will be the most stringent yet for European holidays.
Anyone planning to visit the EU will be required to present an additional document before entering the Schengen Area.
As of now, the Schengen Area includes most EU countries, with Cyprus and Ireland as exceptions. Bulgaria and Romania became the newest members in March 2024.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), around 7-8% of UK households do not have internet access. This poses a significant challenge for many potential holidaymakers since the ETIAS application cannot be completed by mail.
To enjoy a European holiday, you’ll need to find someone who can help or access a device with an internet connection.
What do you need for the ETIAS?
The ETIAS application requires personal information, such as passport details, home address, parental information, and your travel history.
A fee of €7 applies to travelers aged 18-70, with those outside this age range exempt from payment.
Even after obtaining your ETIAS, border security checks will still apply.
As for processing times, Gemma Brown, head of product at Travel Republic, offered expert advice to The Sun. She advised applying and securing approval before booking your trip, as processing can take anywhere from a few minutes to 96 hours, and in some cases, up to 30 days.
