UN Tourism and Alliance Unveil New ESG Framework to Elevate Sustainability Efforts in Global Tourism

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The UN Tourism Organization has joined forces with the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance to establish a unified Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework for the tourism sector.

This collaborative effort aims to provide a consistent and reliable way for tourism businesses to measure and report their sustainability initiatives. Developed in partnership with the University of Oxford’s SDG Impact Lab, the ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses will serve as a vital tool for the industry.

Under this new agreement, UN Tourism will collaborate with the Alliance to pilot the framework, refine its indicators and tools, and enhance stakeholder engagement. This initiative is poised to drive meaningful progress in sustainability reporting and impact measurement across the global tourism sector.

UN Tourism Executive Director Zoritsa Urosevic says: “The ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses is set to transform the tourism sector by establishing harmonised and essential standards for companies to assess and report their sustainability efforts. The collaboration between UN Tourism and the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance highlights how commitment and strategic partnerships can drive alignment and significant progress in ESG.”

Glenn Mandziuk, Chief Executive Officer of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, adds: “Collaborating with UN Tourism on the development of a harmonised ESG Framework represents a significant milestone for the global tourism industry. This partnership not only underscores our commitment to sustainability but also highlights the collective power of our industry to drive meaningful change. By establishing standardised metrics and fostering greater alignment between the private and public sectors, we are paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for tourism worldwide.”

As tourism businesses encounter mounting demands for transparency in their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, a new strategic partnership aims to address these challenges effectively.

The ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses, grounded in the UN-endorsed Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (SF-MST), seeks to align private and public sector data. This framework, backed by unanimous approval from all 193 UN Member States, provides a consistent approach to measuring and reporting sustainability impacts.

Complementing this effort, the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance’s Net Positive Hospitality Pathway and Framework will work to unify metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs), establish industry standards, and simplify reporting processes. Together, these initiatives are set to enhance transparency and accountability in the tourism sector.
