In a significant move to boost tourism during the off-peak months, the Thai government has allocated a 433 million baht fund to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. This initiative, spearheaded by the Thailand Tourism Authority (TAT), aims to promote domestic travel through digital campaigns and events. The goal is to increase revenues from homegrown tourism by 20%, reaching 1.2 trillion baht this year, and reduce reliance on international tourists.
The Charm of Thai Campaign
Tourism Minister Sermsak Pongpanit has outlined two main plans under the “The Charm of Thai” campaign, which focus on promoting travel within Thailand’s five regions. These plans are designed to encourage both locals and international tourists to extend their stays and explore more of what Thailand has to offer.
First Plan: Collaborations with Online Travel Agencies
With a budget of 280 million baht, the first plan involves collaborations with online travel agencies such as Agoda and TripAdvisor. These partnerships will offer attractive tour packages in August and September, aiming to generate 2.8 billion baht in sales and attract 185,000 visitors. The plan leverages digital platforms to reach a wider audience and provide convenient travel options.
Second Plan: Promoting Local Festivals and Events
The second plan focuses on promoting local festivals and events in September, which will boost spending in both major cities and emerging destinations. Notable events include the Chiang Mai Art and Music Festival and the Chon Buri International Music Festival. These events are expected to generate approximately 750 million baht, enhancing the cultural appeal of Thailand and drawing tourists to diverse regions.
Strategic Goals for 2025
Looking ahead, the TAT aims for a 7.5% revenue growth by 2025, centered on domestic tourism. Despite setting a lower target of 205 million domestic trips compared to the previous 220 million, TAT is confident that strategic promotions and partnerships will drive higher figures and revenue. This focus on domestic tourism is part of a broader strategy to mitigate risks from global uncertainties and ensure sustainable growth.
