Armenia’s Metallurgy: Highs and Lows in the First Half of 2024
Armenia’s Metallurgical Industry: A Rollercoaster Ride in the First Half of 2024
The Statistical Committee of Armenia has published production data for the metallurgical industry for the first six months of 2024, presenting a mixed snapshot of the sector’s performance.
Copper concentrate production, a cornerstone of Armenia’s mining industry, showed notable growth. From January to June 2024, the output reached 144.6 thousand tons, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period last year.
Even more remarkable was the rise in zinc concentrate production, which soared by 20.8% to 5.3 thousand tons.
However, not all areas of the industry experienced positive trends. Molybdenum concentrate production fell by 25.2%, totaling 7.9 thousand tons. The production of ferromolybdenum faced an even steeper decline, plummeting by 49.2% to just 2.2 thousand tons.
In the steel pipe production sector, there was a substantial increase of 26%, with output reaching 10.9 thousand tons. Contrarily, aluminum foil production saw a significant decrease of 28.1%, resulting in 9.8 thousand tons.
The importance of the mining sector to Armenia’s economy cannot be overstated, as it significantly contributes to the country’s export revenues and tax income. This is underscored by the latest figures from the Armenian State Revenue Committee.
In the first half of 2024, the Zangezur Copper-Molybdenum Combine (ZCMC) emerged as the top taxpayer among the country’s 1,000 largest taxpayers. The company paid 64 billion drams in taxes to the state budget, equivalent to over 164 million USD, representing an 84% increase in tax payments compared to the first half of 2023.
