In Sarawak, Malaysia, the well-known Niah Caves complex has been formally
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as confirmed by the Malaysian Ministry
of Tourism, Arts and Culture or MOTAC on Sunday. The 21 member states of the
World Heritage Committee, managed by India, took this decision to designate this
much-respected Malaysian destination this time.
Now, with this new recognition, the Southeast Asian nation has five World
Heritage Sites marked by UNESCO so far. Niah Caves complex has the longest
known records of human contact with rainforest. The prehistoric rock paintings,
rich archaeological deposits and boat-shaped burials at the north edge of the
massif exemplify biological and human life during the Pleistocene to the Mid-
Holocene times.
How to reach: One need to cross the Niah River in a motorized boat. Then avail a
one hour walk to reach the entrance of The Great Cave. Miri (MYY) Airport is the
nearest airport to Niah National Park. Bintulu (BTU) and Bandar Seri Begawan
(BWN) are the other nearby airports to access. Air Asia and Malaysian Airlines
have their flight services to Miri.

around this cave area in Sarawak.
