Jordan’s Umm al-Jimal village has recently been added to the World Heritage List
of UNESCO, a decision greeted by the tourism and antiquities minister of the
country with open arms and defined it as a major achievement for Jordan.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO),
which is organized a meeting of its World Heritage Committee in New Delhi in
India, explained on X platform on Friday that the original structures revealed at
Umm al-Jimal dates back to the first century AD.
The village is located near the Jordanian-Syrian border, around 86kms north of
the capital city, Amman, Jordan, and is known as “the black oasis” because of the
presence of black volcanic rock in the area.
How to reach: The cities like Amman and Irbid are located roughly one hours and
15 minutes away. The site can be reached by rental car, or, be a part of an
organized tour from one of the aforementioned cities. The closest town to Umm
Al Jimal is Al Mafraq, 14 kilometers away. The adjoining airport to Jordan
is Amman (AMM). Flydubai, Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates, Air India, Vistara and
other airlines can be availed to reach Amman.
Best hotels: Amman Marriott Hotel, Hilton Amman, The Ritz – Carlton, Amman,
Grand Hyatt Amman are some of the names that one can rely on when it comes
to best accommodation and hospitality.
Other things to see: King Abdullah Mosque, the Jordan museum, Roma Theater,
Royal Automobile Museum are some of the best places to visit among many
others, while coming to Jordan.
Best time to visit: To visit Jordan, the best time is during spring i.e., March to May
or autumn i.e., September to November.
Tourism Figures: In 2023, 410 billion visited Jordan. It’s an up from JD5. 254 billion
in 2022, directing that the tourist numbers who visited Jordan in 2023 increased
to 6,353,800 visitors.
