Domestic travel in Saudi Arabia has seen a significant rise, according to recent data from Wego.
Wego’s report highlights a notable 20.31 percent increase in domestic flight bookings during Eid Al-Fitr this year compared to the same period last year.
The travel app and online marketplace, catering to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, recorded over three million searches specifically for Riyadh. Additionally, there was a 19.63 percent increase in domestic travel bookings during Eid Al-Fitr compared to the previous month.
Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dammam emerged as the most popular domestic destinations during the Eid Al-Fitr holidays, drawing a substantial number of travelers from across the Kingdom. These cities, known for being major domestic travel hubs year-round, hosted special events and celebrations during Eid, further enhancing their attractiveness to visitors.
Abha, Medina, Jizan, Tabuk, Taif, Al Qassim, and Najran followed closely behind, reflecting a blend of leisure and homecoming trips during the holiday period.
Solo travelers made up the majority of domestic travelers during Eid Al-Fitr, with couples and families following behind.
Most bookings were made between two to seven days before departure, indicating a trend towards spontaneous travel planning among Saudi travelers.
Consistent growth in domestic travel across Saudi Arabia
The increase in domestic travel during holidays is not limited to Eid Al-Fitr; similar spikes have been observed during other events such as New Year and Founding Day, with month-on-month increases reaching up to 56.69 percent.
These trends highlight Saudi travelers’ preference for local destinations during holidays. Earlier this year, the Saudi Ministry of Tourism announced a record-breaking 100 million visitors, the majority of whom were domestic travelers, reinforcing this preference.
Wego expects continued growth in domestic travel within Saudi Arabia, driven by the Kingdom’s commitment to developing its tourism sector through various initiatives, including mega projects, international events, and infrastructure improvements.
