New Zealand Immigration Introduces Enhanced Online System for Easier Transit Visa Applications

Reading Time: < 1 minute

New Zealand is transitioning its transit visa application to an online system starting August 12, aiming to streamline the process for applicants. The Enhanced Immigration Online system will handle the applications, although group transit visa applications for Chinese citizens will temporarily remain paper-based. New Zealand Immigration is actively working to include this group in the online process soon.

Additionally, New Zealand will include Fiji in its Transit Visa Waiver Program beginning September 4, 2024. Fijian nationals will be eligible to use the NZeTA Transit for layovers at Auckland International Airport. However, Fijian travelers heading to New Zealand to visit, study, or work will still need to secure the appropriate visas. Importantly, those flying through Wellington or Christchurch, where no transit facilities are available, will also require a visitor visa.

Earlier this year, New Zealand announced the upcoming elimination of the transit visa requirement for Fijians, a move following discussions between New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. They also set a bilateral trade target of $2 billion by 2030, up from the current $1.4 billion. The decision to abolish the transit visa, a remnant from the 2006 political tensions, aims to ease travel and potentially boost relations between the two nations.
