Madhya Pradesh has pioneered the establishment of a ‘Responsible Tourism Mission’ in India, focusing on community empowerment and development. This initiative highlights homestays supported by the government, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture and experience the principle that ‘the guest is akin to God’. This approach not only promotes authentic local food and entertainment but has also led to the creation of 130 rural homestays across 41 villages, drawing numerous tourists keen to experience this unique lifestyle.

The state encourages tribal families to convert their homes into guest accommodations, fostering entrepreneurship and providing additional income sources. These efforts are supported by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB), which helps enhance village amenities and introduces activities such as pottery, bullock cart rides, and cultural performances. Notably, the village of Madla near the Panna Tiger Reserve was recognized as one of the best tourism villages globally by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 2023.

Moreover, the introduction of a responsible souvenir initiative, including Art & Craft Centres in Madla and Dhamma, further supports rural tourism. This project aims to promote local crafts, develop destination-themed souvenirs, establish fair pricing through market connections, increase artisan income, and diversify through artisan skill training.

This comprehensive approach to Responsible Tourism in Madhya Pradesh sets a new standard in Indian tourism, highlighting community-driven initiatives. It caters to the growing trend of sustainable tourism and voluntary tourism, where visitors engage in local volunteer work, enhancing their travel experience through active contributions to community development.
