Hillsborough County Sets new Record for June Tourism Collections

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hillsborough County’s tourism industry achieved record-breaking success in June, with the highest ever tourist tax collections and taxable hotel revenue.

Hillsborough County’s tourism sector experienced its most successful June ever, setting new records in Tourist Development Tax (TDT) collections and taxable hotel revenue. The TDT collections for June, reflecting May’s data, soared to $5,400,066, while taxable hotel revenue reached an impressive $90,046,768.

Despite the summer typically attracting fewer visitors to the Tampa Bay area, Santiago C. Corrada, President and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, noted a significant exception this year. He attributed the strong performance in June to the area’s growing popularity as a premier destination for major conventions and meetings.

Santiago C. Corrada, President and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, extended a warm welcome to the brothers and esteemed guests of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. during their 84th Grand Conclave on June 28. Hillsborough County’s tourism industry celebrated its most successful June ever, breaking records in both tourist development tax collections and taxable hotel revenue. Events like the Grand Conclave played a significant role in this achievement.

“I can’t overstate how important conventions and meetings are to the local economy,” said Corrada. “As an example, two major conventions – the Global Special Operations Foundation’s SOF Week in early May and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated’s Grand Conclave in late June – drew almost 50,000 attendees combined with an estimated economic impact of nearly $40 million. Our record-setting June can be directly attributed to our ability to not only attract, but successfully host these events.  And we’ve worked alongside our partners to make Tampa Bay a premiere choice for convention goers and meeting professionals as well as the leisure traveler.”

June’s hotel occupancy rate was strong, reaching 71.3%, which is a 2.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Revenue per available room rose by 6% from June 2023, hitting $103.51, while the average daily rate was $145.11, surpassing last June’s figures by 3.3%.

Crowds gathered to watch a U.S. Army MH-6 Helicopter soar over the Garrison Channel outside the Tampa Convention Center on May 8 during a Live Capabilities Demonstration at SOF Week 2024. Hillsborough County’s tourism sector experienced its best June ever, with record-breaking figures in tourist development tax collections and taxable hotel revenue. Events like SOF Week significantly contributed to this success.

The summer of conventions in Tampa Bay is in full swing. Destinations International, the leading association for destination professionals, hosted their largest annual convention ever, attracting 2,000 travel and tourism professionals to the J.W. Marriot Tampa Water Street from July 16-18. Looking ahead, Visit Tampa Bay is preparing to welcome over 2,000 top tourism industry professionals, travel experts, and state leaders for the Florida Governor’s Conference on Tourism in August.

Partnering with over 900 organizations, Visit Tampa Bay strives to offer a unique Tampa Bay experience to visitors from all walks of life. Last year, this thriving industry supported over 59,000 jobs, generated $535 million in state and local taxes, and contributed nearly $9 billion to Hillsborough County’s total economic impact.
