In the contemporary landscape of tourism, the integration of sophisticated digital tools and data analysis is essential for enhancing operational efficiency. Christopher Cocker, the CEO of the Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO), emphasized this point during the recent launch of the Pacific Tourism Data Initiative (PTDI) training in Timor Leste. Cocker noted that this initiative underscores the SPTO’s dedication to employing technological advancements for improved decision-making and increased productivity.
The PTDI activity forms a key part of the Pacific Digital Tourism Transformation project, supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZMFAT) under its second phase of funding. The project aims to facilitate evidence-based decision-making through the publication of three critical reports each year: a bi-annual International Visitor Survey (IVS), an annual Business Confidence Index (BCI), and an annual Community Attitude Survey (CAS), encompassing data from ten Pacific Island countries including the Cook Islands, Niue, PNG, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Kiribati, Timor Leste, and FSM-Yap.
The training program is conducted in collaboration with Timor Leste’s Ministry of Tourism & Environment, focusing on optimal methods for gathering vital tourism data. Participants in this initiative include staff from the ministry’s Research and Statistics Division and Activities and Products Division, as well as representatives from the Haburas Foundation, Timor-Leste’s Immigration Service, the National Directorate of Foreign Employment, Autoridade Tributaria, the Central Bank, the Ministry of Finance, the Municipal Sector of Dili, and the National Institute of Statistics, among others. This collaborative, multi-sectoral effort is designed to ensure thorough and effective data collection and analysis.
Cocker also mentioned that the initiative is guided by the SPTO’s Pacific Tourism Statistics Strategy and Digital Strategy. The aims are to refine data management practices, enhance the compilation and distribution of statistical data, and bolster statistical skills and competencies by leveraging innovative digital solutions for greater efficiency and productivity.
