Lesotho is a small, mountainous, landlocked country entirely surrounded by South Africa. It has a population of about two million people and a per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of $999.7 in 2022, classifying it as a lower middle-income country. Predominantly highland, its lowest point is 1,400 meters above sea level. Once a British protectorate, Lesotho gained independence in October 1966. It is a constitutional monarchy, with a King serving as Head of State, and a government comprising a 33-member Senate and a 120-member National Assembly.
Economic Growth
Lesotho’s economy grew by 2% in 2023, largely driven by the public sector and construction activities, notably the Lesotho Highlands Water Project-II megaproject. This project significantly impacted transportation, logistics, and financial services. Although early 2024 saw delays due to strikes affecting dam construction work, activities have since resumed.
