9.24 Million Foreign Tourists Visited India in 2023: Gajendra Singh Shekhawat

Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and South Korea are among the top 20 source countries for tourism to India, according to Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. During a recent Rajya Sabha session, the minister shared that India welcomed 9.24 million foreign tourists in 2023, highlighting the significant contribution from the Asia Pacific region.

The Ministry of Tourism’s recent presentation to Rajya Sabha revealed that out of the 9.24 million foreign tourists, approximately 1.22 million came from the six Asia Pacific countries. This represents a 43.5% growth over the previous year, showcasing the region’s importance as a source market for inbound tourism.

Shekhawat also noted a significant rise in medical tourism, with foreign tourist arrivals for medical purposes increasing from 183,000 in 2020 to a provisional 635,000 in 2023. To support this growth, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched India’s official portal for Medical Value Travel (MVT) to streamline information and the patient journey for international medical travelers. Additionally, the Government of India has extended e-medical visa and e-medical attendant visa facilities to nationals of 167 countries.

To boost India’s share in the global tourism market, the Ministry of Tourism promotes India as a holistic destination. In 2023, the Ministry hosted the 46th edition of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Travel Mart in New Delhi, bringing together tourism professionals and business stakeholders from around the world.
