Chandigarh Launches Pioneering Tourism Policy To Improve Visitor Experience

Following an in-depth review of the policies from Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and various union territories, the Chandigarh administration is in the process of drafting a new policy. This draft is anticipated to be completed by the end of August.

For the first time, the UT administration is crafting a tourism policy aimed at boosting the city’s economic benefits from tourism. Drawing insights from the tourism policies of Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and other union territories, the administration is currently preparing the draft, which is expected to be finalized by the end of August.

Chandigarh boasts several prominent tourist attractions, such as the Capitol Complex in Sector 1, the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, Bird Park, the Indian Air Force Heritage Centre, and the Government Museum and Art Gallery in Sector 10. Annually, the “City Beautiful” welcomes around 30,000 international visitors and 1.2 million domestic tourists.

A new portal will be established to enable hotels to regularly update information on both domestic and international tourists. Each hotel will be assigned a unique ID and password, ensuring data is automatically compiled into the system. To enhance tourist experience, a toll-free number will be provided for lodging complaints. Additionally, a streamlined single-window system will be introduced for approving film shoots in the city. The UT administration will also recruit and register more tour guides, with standardized rates to be posted on the official tourism website.

Tourist Police to Assist Visitors

According to the draft, the tourism department plans to employ 30 dedicated policemen to assist tourists. These officers will wear a distinctive white uniform with blue badges labeled ‘Tourist Police.’

A new portal will be launched, allowing hotels to update information on the number of domestic and international tourists. Each hotel will receive a unique ID and password to facilitate automatic data compilation within the system.

To ensure visitor satisfaction, a toll-free number will be available for tourists to lodge complaints.

Additionally, a streamlined single-window system will be introduced for approving film shoots in the city.
