In a bid to boost the economic impact of tourism, the Union Territory administration of Chandigarh is crafting its inaugural tourism policy. This initiative follows a comprehensive analysis of the existing policies from Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and other territories. The policy’s draft is underway and is slated for completion by the end of August.
Chandigarh, often referred to as the City Beautiful, boasts notable attractions such as the Capitol Complex in Sector 1, the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, Bird Park, the Indian Air Force Heritage Centre, and the Government Museum and Art Gallery in Sector 10. The city attracts roughly 30,000 international and over 1.2 million domestic tourists annually.
According to the upcoming draft, the tourism department intends to assign 30 officers to assist tourists at various attractions around Chandigarh. These officers, who will undergo training at the Institute of Hotel Management in Sector 42, will be easily recognizable in their distinctive white uniforms with blue “tourist police” badges.
Additionally, a new online portal is being developed for hotels to upload and manage tourist data seamlessly. Each hotel will receive a unique ID and password to facilitate this process. The administration will also introduce a toll-free number for tourist inquiries and complaints, and implement a streamlined process for approving film shoots within the city. To further enhance tourist services, more accredited guides will be appointed, with their fees standardized and listed on the official tourism website.
According to the proposed plan, the Department of Tourism will deploy 30 officers, referred to as ‘tourist police,’ to assist travelers. These officers will be easily identifiable by their white uniforms adorned with blue badges marked ‘tourist police.’
An online platform will be established for accommodations to record information regarding domestic and international guests. Each accommodation facility will receive a distinct ID and password to input data directly into the system.
Additionally, tourists will have access to a toll-free helpline to register any grievances.
Furthermore, a streamlined, single-window process will be introduced to expedite the approval of film productions within the city.
