Webjet Reports a Surprising 48% of Australians Opt for Solo Expeditions to Famous Destinations

Nearly half of Australian travelers (48%) are gearing up for solo adventures in the next couple of years, with a significant 25% aiming to embark on their journeys by 2024. These are not mere short excursions; Australians are eagerly planning to explore top bucket-list spots on their prolonged solo journeys.

Recent findings from Webjet, based on research and booking patterns, reveal a growing interest in solo voyages, predominantly among Boomers (48%) and Gen X (26%) demographics.

Millennials, on the other hand, are turning to solo travel as a remedy for workplace burnout, with 45% utilizing these trips to relieve work stress, and 42% viewing them as opportunities for extended career breaks.

The demand for professional guidance among solo travelers

Encouragingly for travel advisors, the market for solo travel extends beyond brief escapes; many are plotting ambitious, bucket-list expeditions.

A significant portion (43%) are keen to visit at least three destinations, and half of the respondents (50%) plan to travel alone for three weeks or longer.

These travelers, often short on time, acknowledge the complexities involved in organizing and booking multi-city itineraries. Almost half (44%) find arranging a solo trip to be time-intensive and challenging, with 12% admitting that these difficulties discourage them from solo travel.

Leading solo travel destinations internationally

The preferred destinations for solo Australian travelers blend well-known local spots with iconic international cities.

Webjet’s data indicates that Bali tops the list for overseas solo travel in 2024-2025, capturing 15% of bookings, followed by London (10%), Auckland (6%), and Queenstown (4%).

Other favored cities include Manila, Tokyo, Bangkok, and Los Angeles, each securing three percent of the bookings. Christchurch and Athens complete the top ten, each attracting two percent of solo travel bookings.
