Reading Time: 6 minutes

Discover Whistler’s vibrant new culinary hotspots, exciting cultural exhibits, and stunning alpine experiences this August. Enjoy cheese, coffee, art, and outdoor fun!

What’s New and Happening in Whistler

Fresh Additions to the Village Stroll

Whistler has recently expanded its vibrant Village Stroll with the introduction of two exciting new food and beverage shops, enhancing the area’s eclectic culinary scene.

Flute & Fromage is a locally owned artisanal cheesemonger offering an impressive selection of premium cheeses from British Columbia and around the world. This boutique provides an array of to-go cheese and charcuterie platters, gift boxes, and expertly crafted cheese and charcuterie boards. Guests can enjoy these delightful offerings on the serviced outdoor patio, complemented by a variety of small dishes, wines, local ciders, craft beers, and organic sodas.

% Arabica, a globally acclaimed Japanese coffee brand, has made its debut in Whistler. Known for its top-tier coffee and distinctive store designs, % Arabica first captured hearts with its Kyoto flagship in 2014. The Whistler location features a unique layout inspired by the region’s iconic winter ice caves, offering visitors an unforgettable coffee experience.

The Great Western Toad Migration

Whistler’s diverse wildlife ranges from majestic bears to tiny toadlets, all contributing to the area’s rich biodiversity. Lost Lake Park is a vital habitat for the Western Toad, a sensitive species native to British Columbia. Every year, thousands of these toads undergo a fascinating transformation, evolving from tadpoles in Lost Lake’s waters into toadlets. These toadlets then embark on a migration from the lake’s shores to the surrounding forests, where they will spend the majority of their lives. This migration usually takes place from late July to early August and spans two to four weeks.

Visitors to Lost Lake may have the chance to observe thousands of tadpoles gathering in the lake’s shallow waters or witness the tiny toads hopping along the shores. While witnessing this natural phenomenon is awe-inspiring, it is crucial not to touch the toadlets, as the natural salts and oils on human skin can harm their porous skin.

To protect these vulnerable toads, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has implemented several measures. These include constructing toad underpasses beneath high-traffic trail networks and a wall along Lost Lake Beach to keep the toads out of hazardous areas. Permanent informational signage has been installed throughout the park, along with temporary seasonal signs to encourage guests to step carefully and walk their bikes during the migration period. These efforts are crucial to the conservation of this remarkable species.

Summer Alpine Experience

August is the perfect time to immerse yourself in Whistler’s breathtaking alpine scenery. The Summer Alpine Experience on Whistler Blackcomb transports you to the mountain peaks via an extensive network of gondolas and chairlifts, including the iconic Peak 2 Peak Gondola, which connects Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.

Alpine Hiking & Cloudraker Skybridge

Explore the alpine trails that meander through vibrant meadows and majestic peaks by ascending Whistler Blackcomb. The Peak Chairlift on Whistler Mountain takes you to Whistler Peak, where you can cross the Cloudraker Skybridge suspension bridge, offering stunning views of the valley and surrounding mountains.

Lift-assisted hiking provides breathtaking mountaintop vistas with minimal exertion, allowing you to conserve energy for further exploration. Choose from various walks, ranging from gentle 30-minute strolls to more challenging day hikes, such as the iconic High Note Trail on Whistler Mountain. August is an ideal time for wildflower viewing, with fields bursting into vibrant colors thanks to the abundant moisture from an unusually wet spring.

Mountain-Top Dining at the Roundhouse Lodge

Conclude your alpine adventure at the Roundhouse Lodge, where the Umbrella Bar offers spectacular views and refreshing beverages. Visit the newly renovated Corona Mountaintop Lodge, featuring a revamped Seppo’s Bar and a redesigned outdoor patio, which will host DJ sets and exciting events throughout the summer.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, the Roundhouse Lodge presents the Mountain Top Summer Feast, a remarkable dining experience with live music. The buffet includes a carving station with prime rib, roasted chicken, tiger prawns, and pork ribs, as well as an Indigenous-inspired station in collaboration with the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, offering Bannock, cedar plank salmon, and candied salmon Caesar salad. Additionally, the buffet features an array of delicious vegetables, salads, breads, and desserts.

On August 8, acclaimed Chef David Hawksworth and his culinary team from Hawksworth Restaurant will partner with Whistler Blackcomb for an exclusive outdoor dining pop-up event atop Whistler Mountain. Guests will enjoy a welcome cocktail followed by a masterfully crafted four-course dinner with wine pairings from Tantalus Vineyards, all while taking in the stunning summer alpine views.
