Fiji unveils its National Sustainable Tourism Framework, a 10-year plan aiming for sustainable growth, community well-being, and cultural preservation by 2034.

On June 19th, Fiji made a significant move towards a sustainable tourism future by unveiling its National Sustainable Tourism Framework. This 10-year strategic plan aims to foster the sustainable growth of the country’s tourism sector. The new framework, which replaces the Fijian Tourism 2021 plan, embraces the theme “Navigating Toward a Sustainable Tourism Future” and includes a detailed 3-year Action Plan.

The core objective of the National Sustainable Tourism Framework is to establish a sustainable, thriving, and inclusive tourism industry by 2034. This industry will enhance community well-being, provide equitable opportunities, and protect Fiji’s unique cultural heritage and biodiversity. The framework’s main goals align with the four objectives of the 2030 Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework.

Developed in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation and supported by the governments of New Zealand and Australia, the framework emerged from extensive consultations. These included private-public dialogues, focus group discussions, and workshops involving key tourism stakeholders, financial institutions, government ministries, academia, and donor partners.

Fiji’s Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, speaking at the launch event, emphasized the framework’s commitment to fostering a prosperous economy while preserving the environment, empowering local communities, and nurturing an industry that harmonizes with Fiji’s diverse culture and natural surroundings.
