Perhaps it’s the gloomy UK weather, but a record number of Brits (83%) are eager to go abroad for a holiday this summer, according to new research from AllClear Travel Insurance. This is an increase from 78% last June and 64% the previous year.

AllClear’s annual tracking study surveyed a representative sample of 2,106 adults about their overseas summer holiday plans for this year.

Beach holidays (45%) and relaxing hotel pool stays (30%) continue to be the most popular choices for summer 2024. Additionally, cruise holidays remain a favorite among those over 55 (11%). Other holiday preferences have seen year-on-year increases:

City breaks have reached a two-year high, rising from 17% in 2022 to 23% in 2023, and peaking at 30% this summer.

Romantic breaks have also grown in popularity, increasing from 8% to 13% over the past two years (June 2022 to June 2024).

AirBnB stays have become more favored, up from 6% to 15% over two years.

Walking holidays have surged in interest, jumping from 6% in June 2022 to 15% this summer.

The AllClear data also indicates a significant rise in the percentage of people with medical conditions seeking a holiday abroad this summer, reaching 73%. This marks a notable increase from 61% in June 2023 and 58% in summer 2022.

In recent years, we have noted a growing trend among older holiday makers – and those with medical conditions – to economise on their travel cover in order to get a cheaper policy. We encourage everyone to get the best possible cover, to ensure no one is inadvertently putting themselves at risk when abroad this summer.”
