Korean Air has inaugurated a new air route linking Macao and Seoul, with the first flight having taken off from Seoul and landed in Macao at midnight on July 1. In conjunction with this new service, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has teamed up with Korean Air to launch enticing airfare deals and a robust promotional campaign. This campaign includes hosting Korean media groups in Macao, aiming to boost Korean tourist numbers, broaden the diversity of its visitor markets, and solidify Macao’s reputation as a global hub for tourism and leisure.
Korea has emerged as the foremost international visitor market for Macao.
This direct air connection promises to amplify international visitations.
From January to May 2024, statistics have shown that Korea is the leading international visitor source for Macao and the fourth overall. With the addition of Korean Air’s new service, the total weekly flights between Macao and Seoul have risen to 35, with an additional three weekly flights to and from Busan. This significant increase in air transport capacity is expected to enhance mutual tourism traffic between Macao and Korea.
Starting in September, Korean Air will further expand its service with a new route from Macao to Lisbon, via Seoul. Travelers will be able to purchase a single ticket for the journey and check their baggage through to their final destination. This expansion in air routes is set to boost Macao’s competitive edge in the global travel arena.
Celebrations marked the arrival of the first flight from Seoul to Macao.
Upon the arrival of the inaugural Seoul flight, KE169, at midnight on July 1, MGTO’s mascot, MAK MAK, greeted passengers and presented souvenirs, including to Korean media representatives, underscoring Macao’s warm hospitality.
The Korean media is set to enhance Macao’s visibility through their coverage.
MGTO, in collaboration with Korean Air and its marketing team in Korea, has coordinated familiarization trips for Korean media groups. From July 1 to July 11, two groups of media professionals will tour and explore Macao’s rich cultural tapestry and dynamic tourism offerings.
These media groups will visit significant landmarks such as the Historic Centre of Macao, the Macao Grand Prix Museum, and various major resorts to review their tourism facilities. They will delve into local communities, savor traditional dishes, and visit notable sites like the Ruins of St. Paul’s and Senado Square. Their experiences will be shared across various media platforms in Korea, further promoting Macao.
Simultaneous multimedia promotions aim to attract Korean tourists.
Alongside the commencement of the new flights, MGTO and Korean Air are offering special promotions on airfares and have launched a comprehensive promotional blitz that includes advertisements on Korean Air’s digital platforms, social media, and even TV shopping channels in Korea. Korean influencers are invited to record their experiences in Macao, enhancing the appeal of the destination. Furthermore, MGTO has organized roadshows in Seoul in 2023 and June of this year to attract more Korean visitors and diversify its market reach.
The introduction of this new air service by Korean Air is poised to attract more high-end Korean travelers to Macao, increasing tourist arrivals from Korea and affirming Macao’s position as a premier global tourism and leisure destination. Under its “1+4” development strategy, MGTO remains dedicated to launching dynamic marketing initiatives to encourage more Koreans to visit Macao and explore new international markets.
