The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is excited to declare that the Bioscore Standard, available in both English and Spanish, has been granted GSTC-Recognized Standard status. This recognition confirms its alignment with the GSTC Industry Criteria.
Located in Valencia, Spain, Bioscore is a tech company focused on incorporating sustainability into the hotel industry. They aim to boost competitiveness through innovative research and development solutions.
The Bioscore standard outlines sustainable management practices for accommodation facilities, taking into account environmental, social, and governance aspects. These practices are categorized into six key areas: emissions, energy, water, waste, food and beverage, and corporate social responsibility (CSR).
This recognition by GSTC signifies that the standard has been thoroughly reviewed by GSTC technical experts and the GSTC Assurance Panel, establishing that its content matches the broad guidelines of the GSTC Criteria for sustainable tourism. These guidelines are built on four foundational pillars: Sustainable Management, Socioeconomic impacts, Cultural impacts, and Environmental stewardship.
The recognition by GSTC pertains solely to the standard and does not extend to certification, which involves a third-party review and audit to ensure compliance with the standard, nor does it cover accreditation, which is the formal confirmation that a certification body is competent and impartial in accordance with international certification standards.
The scope of this standard specifically targets tourist accommodations like hotels, and it has a worldwide reach. The recognition remains effective until there are changes to either the standard or the GSTC Industry Criteria, with an important deadline: by December 31, 2024, Bioscore is expected to seek accreditation, a commitment they plan to fulfill in the third quarter of the current year.
In the words of Víctor Monzón, CEO of Bioscote Sustainability, “The recognition of our standard by the GSTC is good news for Bioscore and for our customers. Working in alignment with such a prestigious organization is a guarantee”.
“We congratulate Bioscore for embracing the Four Pillars of the GSTC Criteria. Adopting a holistic perspective on sustainability showcases Bioscore’s commitment to a comprehensive and global approach,” says Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC.
As of now, 73 standards have been recognized by GSTC. This status serves as verification to the market that these standards meet international norms. Although GSTC Recognition confirms the equivalence of the standards to the GSTC Criteria, it does not attest to the reliability of the certification process itself. Holders of GSTC-Recognized standards are encouraged to pursue and complete the accreditation process, which validates that their certification procedures meet global standards for best practices, transparency, and thoroughness.
