Australian Government Introduces New Visa Standards for International Students in 2024

Australia’s government has introduced stricter regulations for international student visas to manage the country’s migration rates and address the housing market challenges exacerbated by increased migration. As of March 23, 2024, the new Genuine Student (GS) criteria have supplanted the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) standards.

The policy was officially announced on December 11, 2023, but it only affects those who apply for a study visa after the implementation date. According to migration professionals in Gold Coast, the modification aims to curtail migration numbers. There has been a notable increase in study visa requests from countries like India, the Philippines, and China, prompting this regulatory change.

Under the updated GS criteria, international students must demonstrate a sincere intent to study in Australia rather than primarily seeking employment opportunities. The goal is for students to return to their countries after their education or to acquire specific skills that are in demand in Australia.

Applicants are now required to furnish detailed information about their personal and economic situation, including details about their family, employment status, community involvement, and economic background. They need to justify their choice of studying in Australia, including their selection of a particular institution and how they believe it will benefit their education and career. Furthermore, they must provide a comprehensive understanding of the coursework and their prospective living situation in Australia. Each of these areas must be addressed in English, with explanations no shorter than 150 words per topic.

Additionally, the criteria for English proficiency have been heightened. Applicants must also pass a new test, designed to verify their genuine need for educational opportunities in Australia. The imposition of a ‘No Further Stay’ clause will further restrict the employment possibilities for international students. Migration specialists, like those from Migration Doctors in Australia, advise that students and educational institutions adhere closely to these guidelines to ensure a seamless visa application process. The government has also warned that educational entities failing to comply with these visa regulations will face suspensions.
