Thorbjørn Olesen secured his eighth DP World Tour title in impressive fashion, posting a final-round 67 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship. Despite starting the day with a four-shot lead over Rasmus Højgaard, Olesen saw his advantage vanish within seven holes due to Højgaard’s strong start.
A pivotal eagle and a three-shot swing on the subsequent hole dramatically shifted the course of the day, allowing Olesen to cruise to a six-shot victory at 27 under. Højgaard finished with a 69, concluding the tournament at 21 under, just one shot ahead of Frederic Lacroix from France, who wrapped up the week with a 68.
Olesen’s total score of 261, which included a course-record-equalling 62 on Friday, marks the season’s lowest. His winning margin of six shots is also the largest of the season so far. With this victory, Olesen has now triumphed in three consecutive seasons and secured seven wins out of eight when holding the 54-hole lead.
This victory propels Olesen to sixth in the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, and he could climb as high as 57th on the Official World Golf Ranking, his highest position since June 2019.
Expressing his joy, Olesen, based in the UAE, mentioned, “It’s very special, standing here with (son) Cooper makes it a little more special. It was still a battle out there, and I played some nice golf coming in.”
Both Olesen and Højgaard birdied the first hole, but Olesen faced challenges on the second, surrendering a double-bogey and seeing his lead cut to two. Despite the setbacks, Olesen recovered with crucial birdies, including a 36-footer on the third.
The turning point came on the par-five eighth, where Olesen’s eagle and Højgaard’s struggles led to a three-shot swing in Olesen’s favor. Olesen continued to extend his lead with birdies, securing the victory with a four-shot advantage on the treacherous par-five last.
Lacroix, returning to the DP World Tour after a successful European Challenge Tour graduation last season, achieved his best result to date with a solid performance. Other notable finishers, including Maximilian Kieffer, Yannik Paul, Keita Nakajima, Callum Shinkwin, and Brandon Stone, concluded the week ten shots off the lead.
