Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is delighted to announce the arrival of a new southern white rhino calf. This addition marks the 18th rhino born at the conservation facility since 1991, underscoring their enduring commitment to bolstering at-risk wildlife populations. The experienced mother, Ursula, and the recently named calf, Rocket, are both thriving.
Senior Animal Care Specialist Justin Klauss reports that “Rocket spends the majority of his days engaged in nursing, napping, and expending his abundant energy.” Despite being born at a substantial 100 pounds, Rocket has quite a bit of weight to gain in order to catch up to his 4,500-pound father, Khari.
To enhance awareness of white rhino conservation initiatives, Fossil Rim will be offering specialized tours. These tours will guide guests through the Intensive Management Area, providing insights into ongoing missions dedicated to other endangered species. The tour will culminate in a close encounter with the calf, facilitated by a rhino specialist.
The tours will run from Sunday through Friday, commencing on January 29th and concluding on March 3rd, 2024. Priced at $900 per tour, each excursion will accommodate a maximum of four guests. All proceeds will contribute to Fossil Rim’s mission of safeguarding species in jeopardy.
