Cannes Film Festival Hosts Debut of Hong Kong Tourism Board New Cinematic Campaign

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) unveiled a captivating new campaign titled “Live Out the Cinematic Hong Kong” on Friday, May 17. This initiative celebrates iconic Hong Kong cinema with the documentary film “Hong Kong Classics Reimagined” and the launch of an online travel guide designed to attract cinephiles and cultural tourists to the city. The film premiered at the renowned “Marché du Film” during the 77th Cannes Film Festival in France, introducing it to a global audience.

Highlighting Hong Kong’s distinctive charm through classic films, “Hong Kong Classics Reimagined” marks the first collaborative effort of six filmmakers—Wing Shya, Man Lim Chung, Kenji Tanigaki, Lawrence Kan, Wong Kwok-keung, and Lemon Liu. This 60-minute film revisits classic Hong Kong cinema across six genres: romance, detective thrillers, martial arts, action, comedy, and drama. Featuring celebrated actors such as Sylvia Chang, Sammo Hung, Gordon Lam, Karen Mok, and the duo Charlene Choi and Gillian Chung from Twins, the film showcases the city’s rich cultural heritage and unique allure.

HKTB Chairman Dr Pang Yiu-kai said, “The influence of movies reaches far beyond entertainment,
inspiring and igniting the desire to travel. Through Hong Kong Classics Reimagined, we pay tribute to timeless classics in Hong Kong’s cinematic history and revitalise them with a fresh burst of energy. We hope to inspire audiences from around the world to bring their cinematic dreams to life and enjoy unforgettable experiences in the captivating city of Hong Kong.”

Award-winning actress Ms Sylvia Chang, who plays the lead role in one of the shorts in the docufilm, shared her experience of the project. She expressed that she had a deep appreciation for the beauty of Hong Kong throughout the filming process with director Man. She mentioned that Hong Kong’s urban areas and suburbs are closely connected, and within just a few tens of minutes, one can travel from the bustling city to beaches, countryside parks, and reservoirs, all of which boast beautiful scenery. She further expressed, “I have always regarded Hong Kong as a blessed place, and I hope that visitors to Hong Kong will not only engage in shopping but also discover the scenic beauty it has to offer.”

Veteran film producer Joseph Chan Sinn-Gi, who has produced four short films, shared his lifelong connection with Hong Kong, where he grew up and has lived his entire life. He has a profound affection for every aspect of the city. Chan expressed his desire for visitors to frequently travel to Hong Kong, where they can create memorable experiences, explore various opportunities, enjoy the city’s dynamic and adaptable atmosphere, and relish its exquisite cuisine and warm hospitality.

To celebrate the launch, the HKTB invited filmmakers from over 40 countries and regions—including film distributors, film festival curators, and representatives from on-demand streaming platforms in France, Germany, the UK, the US, Spain, Japan, South Korea, and Canada—to the kick-off ceremony. This event highlighted Hong Kong’s metropolitan charm and culture as seen through the lens of local filmmakers, promoting the city globally.

In conjunction with the film’s premiere, HKTB also introduced a comprehensive online travel guide on its website, offering specially curated experiences that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of Hong Kong cinema. Tourists can explore iconic film locations and experience the city’s charm through activities like visiting record stores featured in “Infernal Affairs,” retracing the famous motorbike route from “Fallen Angels” on an open-top bus, and participating in Wing Chun workshops honoring martial arts legend Bruce Lee. This journey is inspired by the enchanting allure of Hong Kong’s cinematic landscape.
