Indian visits to Germany up 2.2% in December, Closing in on Pre-Pandemic numbers

Germany’s inbound tourism is showing a consistent recovery, increasingly contributing to the overall number of overnight stays. This information comes from an analysis by the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), utilizing preliminary data on overnight stays from the Federal Statistical Office. Furthermore, the German National Tourist Office (GNTO) in India is excited to share that Indian tourists are contributing more significantly to Germany’s tourism sector. The latest figures reveal that in December 2023, there were 51,666 overnight stays by Indian visitors in Germany, marking a 2.2% increase from December 2022. Although this is slightly below the figures for 2019, showing a 7.5% decrease from December 2019 to December 2023, the overall trend is indicative of a strong rebound in travel from India.

By December 2023, the cumulative count of overnight stays from Indian visitors in Germany hit 826,703, marking a remarkable growth of 32.6% over the previous year. Romit Theophilus, who serves as the Director of Marketing & Sales Office – India for the German National Tourist Office (GNTO), highlighted that”India is maintaining its position in the recovery rate for people traveling to Germany from
India. He further added that the good recovery prospects from overseas source markets
offer strong potential for the further recovery of German inbound tourism in the coming
months, with growing travel activity from India, particularly from Asian markets”.
Petra Hedorfer, Chairwoman of the GNTB Executive Board, explains: “In the European
Travel Commission’s Monitoring Sentiment for Intra-European Travel study, Germany
maintained its position among the top five preferred destinations for Europeans in autumn
2023 and is participating in the Europe-wide trend towards international travel. The
proportion of those who only want to travel in their own country in the next six months has
fallen continuously from 31.5% in fall 2021 to 25.7% in fall 2023. European destinations
were still preferred by 55.3% of travelers in autumn 2021, compared to 60.3% in autumn

This means that Europe, as the most important source region, together with good
recovery prospects from overseas source markets, also offers strong potential for the
further recovery of German inbound tourism in the coming months growing travel activity
from Asia, and China in particular, will have a positive impact on the further development
of inbound tourism. We expect additional impetus in the summer from visitors to the
European Football Championship in Germany. In addition, cultural highlights such as the
250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich’s birth, the 35th anniversary of the fall of the
Berlin Wall, and Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025 will provide significant
travel opportunities for international guests.”

The emphasis on sustainability, enjoyable experiences, and the reintroduction of 52 UNESCO World Heritage sites has greatly influenced Indian travelers’ interest in visiting Germany. The distinctive attractions and features continue to draw Indian tourists, leading to an increase in overnight stays and underscoring Germany’s attractiveness as a favored travel destination. Through targeted marketing efforts and partnerships, GNTO India is dedicated to positioning Germany as the prime choice for Indian travelers in search of varied travel experiences, cultural explorations, and unforgettable journeys.
