The Institute for Collaborative Design and Diverse Societies (ICDDS) hosted a training event on sustainable tourism, endorsed by the GSTC, for its members and community partners in Miyajima, Hiroshima, Japan. This Japanese-language GSTC workshop spanned two days, from January 20th to 21st, 2024.
Facilitated by Kazuhiro Arai of Daisetsuzan Nature School and accredited GSTC educator, the sessions were enriched with hands-on examples and insights, guiding participants through the intricacies of sustainable tourism.
The program also included a field trip to the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its “floating” torii gate. This visit allowed participants to engage directly with conservation efforts for historic sites and learn from the initiatives of the Miyajima Registered Guide Liaison Group.
This GSTC-endorsed training initiative by the ICDDS wrapped up with positive outcomes, equipping attendees with critical tools and understanding to promote and implement sustainable tourism. The curriculum, grounded in the GSTC Criteria—universal benchmarks for tourism and travel sustainability—was augmented by both international and local case studies, adding significant depth to the learning experience.
Participants who completed the course were awarded a certificate and offered the option to pursue the official GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism through an additional examination.
